Health issues that concern minorities

June 30 2009   Leave a Comment

Most health issues that concern minorities in the United States are the same ones that concern the poor and disadvantaged of any group of people. The economics of care for medical and health related issues have more of an impact than any other factor in minority health.

An example of the health issues that concern minorities is the HIV/AIDS epidemic amongst blacks in this country. Black Americans account for 12 percent of the population in America but contribute more than half of the AIDS cases diagnosed in 2005. AIDS rate among blacks is ten times that of white Americans. Black teenagers provided almost three/ quarters of the new AIDS cases reported.

Among Latin American women living in the United States, the rate of AIDS cases is nearly six times that of white women. Another of the health issues that concern minorities, particularly in the case of the AIDS epidemics is that minorities with AIDS don’t live as long as do Caucasians with the disease. It is believed that this is the result of better health care provided for whites than minorities.

Studies of agricultural workers in California who tend to be exposed to higher levels of agricultural pesticides have been inconclusive to date, mainly because accurate measurement methods have not yet been developed, but there is some evidence that this is one of the health issues that concern minorities, since Latin American men tend to be more highly represented in this group than do whites.

Another of the many health issues that concern minorities is the higher incidence of childhood asthma amongst minority and disadvantage urban children. Several studies have been commissioned to determine how broad the impact of race is on various health issues.

The influence of various diseases and symptoms related to the increased prevalence of lead and lead-based paint in inner-city environments, including low-birth rate, higher hypertension levels amongst African-Americans, and higher kidney or renal damage or failure.

In any situation where there is increased level of vermin population, those humans who are living in the environment are more likely to be exposed to the illness and disease associated. This is more often than not in an urban living situation. Since those living in the cities under such conditions are often minority groups, it is hardly surprising that the incident of certain vermin carried diseases is higher amongst minority groups.

The major concern among minorities is the lack of quality health care, simply because it is economically out of reach for the poorest of the poor.

Soy health concerns

June 30 2009   Leave a Comment

Increasingly, soy products have been praised as a nutritious and non-animal source of protein. It has been used in products such as tofu, infant formula and soymilk. Vegetarians praise soy analogs as a substitute for meat. Soybeans are being studied by scientists as a curative for such wide ranging medical problems as heart disease, menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis and cancer. However, there are growing soy health concerns for several reasons.

Soybeans contain a high level of a natural compound which apes the female hormone known as estrogen. Critics of the soybean say that as little as two glasses per day of soy milk can change a woman’s menstrual cycle. Critics also point out that soybeans as they appear in nature are not suitable for consumption by humans. All dried beans contain chemicals called phytic acids, but soybeans contain this anti-nutrient in higher levels than other beans. The action of phytic acid in the body is to remove nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, iron and calcium.

This is one of the soy health concerns in developing nations where soybeans are a major food crop. Not only do people in these countries show reduced levels of these minerals, but it may cause nutritional shortfalls in infant formula based on the soybean protein isolate in this country as well.

The only way to make soybeans palatable is to use an extraction process including high heat and chemicals or to subject the beans to extensive fermentation times. Long, slow cooking times which usually solve the problem of phytates are not successful with soybeans. In addition, soybeans contain certain enzyme inhibitors which prevent digestion

A substance called hemagglutinin which causes red blood cells to clot together has been shown to reduce the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood

Critics of soybeans point out that over 90% of all soybeans today come from genetically engineered beans. In addition, there is an extremely high level of pesticide usage on soybean crops.

Soy protein isolate preparation is not an easy process. The beans are mixed with alkaline solution to remove fiber, and then an acid wash in aluminum tanks is used, followed by another alkaline rinse to neutralize the beans. Soymilk prepared in this way contains over 1000% more aluminum than conventional formulas. The soybeans are formed into curds and spray dried at high temperatures to form soy powder. The powder is further heated and dried to form the textured vegetable protein products. Additional compounds formed during the heating and alkaline bath process include nitrites, known to cause cancer and the toxin lysinoalanine.

For all these reasons, soy health concerns are a growing storm of controversy.

Health concerns gel nails

June 29 2009   Leave a Comment

Gel nails are natural looking artificial extensions for the fingernails which are bonded to the underlying nail, thus giving it time to grow out. Gel nails can be shaped smoothed and polished just as acrylic names and natural nails are. They require a technician who is skilled in the application and who follows basic safety guidelines in order to avoid health concerns gel nails provide.

The basic danger which gives rise to health concerns of gel nails is an incompetent technician. Anything which is applied to the natural nails is a danger, but there are degrees of danger. The first thing you should watch for in a technician is basic cleanliness. Does she disinfect her hands and equipment before beginning work on your nails? It is reasonable to ask about what tools she will be using. She may use an electric drill to shape the extensions, but should never use it on the natural nail, as this could lead to irreparable damage.

The bonding agent is another factor to check that could create health concerns for gel nails. There are two types of bonding agents, methyl methacrtylate and ethyl methacrtylate. EMA is the one which should be used as it is more flexible just as the natural nail would be. MMA is too rigid and can cause damage if bumped, because it could tear away or break the nail bed. A break near the cuticle can lead to infections under the nail or around the cuticle or to permanent damage to the nail.

Fungus infections can result if the surface of the natural nail is compromised. This can lead to further tearing with resultant pain, infection and swelling. Broken or thinned areas in the natural nails also allow the bonding agent to get into the blood stream. Some of the chemical compounds in glues and adhesive have been found to have potential carcinogens.

Other health concerns gel nails cause are the inhaled fumes both during the application and later. Salons are generally taking steps to have areas where there may be heavy buildup of odors from hair coloring, permanents, lotions, shampoos and nail remover and polish fan ventilated to avoid inhaling toxic fumes.

Gel nails do not need to be removed as do acrylic nails, but the recommended pattern is to let your nails ‘rest’ periodically with no extensions over the nails. About once ever four months, the natural nails should be allowed to ‘breathe’.
