A number of studies recently regarding the connection between electromagnetic fields from power lines, home wiring, appliances and radar and incidence of cancer, childhood leukemia and other diseases have created electric blanket health concerns.
Some of the leading authorities in the field have come down on the side biological effects, stating categorically that there is no doubt of the weight of evidence showing a connection between electromagnetic fields and biological effects.
This may create a housing problem in areas where any of the above electromagnetic fields are deemed likely to be present. Market value of houses determined to have an electromagnetic field higher than the normal rate may drop drastically, or even be impossible to sell.
A draft report prepared and circulated by the Environmental Protection Agency originally categorized electromagnetic fields as a Class B carcinogen which is the same level as formaldehyde, dioxin and DDT. After what many felt was application of political and lobbying pressure by utility companies and others with a vested interest in preventing such strong wording, the classification of electromagnetic fields as a carcinogen was removed in the final report.
Electromagnetic field measurements are done by means of a Gauss meter. They come in a range of sizes and price ranges. One which measures on three axis-x, y, and z, and is also frequency weighted if it will be used for biological purposes.
Sources of significantly high electromagnetic field readings should be isolated if possible to determine the cause. If the source is outside the house, it could be due to electrical wires, substations, or transformers. Inside the house, high electromagnetic field readings may be due to faulty wiring or to appliances in the house. Correction of faulty wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.
High electromagnetic field readings from computers can affect a person on all sides of the computer. Even a lead block will not prevent these magnetic fields.
The electric blanket health concerns are very real since they have been linked to childhood leukemia. The electric blanket EMF extends as much as six or seven inches into the body. An EMF from a waterbed will continue even if the waterbed is turned off. Only unplugging the unit can stop the field.
Other appliances and devices which are cause for concern include, bedside clocks, lights and lamps, telephones, including cell phones and electric razors and hair dryers.
Caution in understanding these warnings and dangers is recommended. Where possible, avoid prolonged and chronic exposure to high EMF.
