The obvious vehicle health concerns are that of the emissions produced by the millions of autos and trucks on the road. Not only to these emissions have direct effects on the lungs and airways of people, but there appears to be a direct link between vehicle emissions and global warming.
Although government regulations and increased technology have combined to produce lower emission rates, particularly in the newer vehicles, some of the damage done is irreversible, particularly as it relates to the warming of the earth’s average temperature. The guilty components of automobile emissions are the increased rate of carbon from the carbon based fuel molecules combining with the oxygen atoms in the atmosphere. .
Two types of emissions are cause for vehicle health concerns: The tailpipe emissions and the evaporative emissions. Tailpipe emissions are what most people consider when they think of automobile emissions. They consist of hydrocarbons; nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The hydrocarbons are the result of incomplete burning of the fuel in the engine which is released through the tailpipe into the atmosphere. Hydrocarbon emissions are a primary cause of smog and have been shown to be a contributory factor in liver disease and cancer.
Nitrous oxide is the result of nitrogen combining with oxygen under high temperatures, leading to acid rain as well as smog. Carbon monoxide is also a result of incomplete burning of the fuel. It interferes with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and can be lethal particularly to those with heart disease, or in a confined space. Carbon dioxide is helpful to plants and it occurs naturally in the atmosphere. Its role in the global warming controversy has not yet been decided.
The second type of emission leading to vehicle health concerns is evaporative emissions. This occurs when highly volatile gasoline fumes rise from hot engines, from improper gas tank fills or spills. These fumes contain a high level of the hydrocarbons and contribute heavily to urban smog.
It has been calculated that increasing the fuel mileage to 50 miles per gallon on 2 billion cars would have a significant impact on the emission level and on the rate of global warming.
The other vehicle health concerns are more indirect. Accidents are the 4th leading cause of death among males in this country, and most of these are vehicular accidents. Secondly, a significant portion of traffic accidents are alcohol or drug related. While it is not the vehicle that kills people, it is usually operator error, it is still a major health concern when thousands of people are killed each year while riding in or operating a vehicle.
The location of a majority of commercial plasma donor sites near areas of known drug and prostitution activities means the likelihood of donors being from one of the suspect groups is increased as well. Studies have found that location has a great deal to do with who is willing to come to a site to donate plasma. In the past plasma donors often were students needing a few extra dollars to purchase a textbook or see a movie. Increasingly, though, plasma donor sites became a collection point for those people looking for a few dollars to feed their drug habit.
Health concerns for plasma donors are increasing at the same time that there is a world-wide increase in the need for plasma products. Both sides of the equation have real concerns. The clean legitimate donors run the risk of contracting disease through contaminated needle or equipment. The blood products collected may be contaminated by HIV/AIDS virus.
Before testing for AID’s/HIV was readily available, commercial donations of blood plasma resulted in thousands of units of contaminated blood to be used for the clotting agent needed by hemophiliac patients. This is just one of the health concerns for plasma donors.
Alternatively, a frightening situation has developed with the furor over ‘mad cow disease’. The concern is that a tourist or worker in Britain may have eaten beef infected and then come back to the U.S. and become a plasma donor. The legislation enacted in several countries prohibited blood donations by those who had visited Britain in the same way as visiting one of the Caribbean Islands or Africa prohibits blood donation due to AID’s.
Testing for AIDS is now commonplace, and will prevent continuing dangers of plasma donors giving blood products which have been contaminated. The concern about ‘mad cow disease” is much harder to deal with. At present there is no definitive test to determine whether a person who wishes to donate has the disease. The plasma centers have had to rely instead upon eligibility to donate being based on strict travel and residency requirements. This means that those who have lived or traveled extensively in the United Kingdom, those who have traveled in other European countries and members of the military or armed services who have spent time in certain European countries are not eligible to donate blood, or to participate in a commercial plasma site.

Mining has always been known as a profession with a great deal of danger involved. When thinking of mining, often it is coal mining that is pictured, but mining health concerns can be prevalent in other types of mining as well, including uranium mining, copper mining and zinc mining, just to name a few.
In underground mines such as coal mines the first mining health concerns are for the quality and quantity of the air. Miners are dependent upon air being pumped down into the areas where they are working or upon gas masks or breathing apparatus of some type. The mining tunnels can hold pocket of gases which are harmful to breathe as well as having the potential to be combustible. In olden mines the practice was to ignite these pockets then the miner would lie down quickly and let the burning gases race over his body. Now, fans provide much safer means of ventilating areas underground.
Another of the mining health concerns was the black lung disease. This is still unfortunately quite common amongst miners although less frequent now. It was not until 1968 that the public attitude toward this disease and toward other mining disasters began to change and to focus on bringing improvements to the entire industry. The Black Lung Act specified a date by which black lung disease must be eradicated and provided for testing and diagnosis to enforce the law. It also required the owners of the mines to bear all medical, therapeutic and potential death benefits to families of those suffering with Black Lung Disease.
Another of the mining health concerns is the danger of fire or explosion underground. Again, it was not until the major mine disaster in 1968 in Farmington West Virginia in which 78 miners lost their lives that the public was made aware of the dangers and environmental hazards of the mining industry.
Open pit mining such as that found in copper, iron gold and molybdenum pits is done with there are commercial size and quality deposits near the surface in an area. Mining health concerns for open pit minds range from on-the-job accidents, usually involving mining equipment, to cave ins. Lung and bronchial passageway diseases are often found to be more compromised among those who work in a constant environment of airborne particles and dust. Studies drawing a definite correlation between cigarette smoking and mining as an occupation related to number of sick days taken annually show a positive correlation.
