Antiperspirant health concerns
The work of hundreds of volunteers in Marin County, California in completing a comprehensive survey of over 65,000 households in the county resulted in a list of fifteen toxic substances found in hundreds of household soaps, cosmetics, cleaners, creams, lotions and perfumes. The project was the result of a staggering 60% increase in breast cancer rates between the years of 1996 and 2002. Antiperspirant health concerns are just one of the products containing one or more of the toxic compounds.
Some of the substances which are found in to cause antiperspirant health concerns:
Butylated Hydroxytoluene is used as an anti-oxidant to slow color changes in products. In addition to its use as an antiperspirant ingredient, it’s also used in toothpaste, makeup remover, sunscreen, blusher, and hair conditioner. Yet this product is a strong eye and skin irritant.
Cocamide DEA/Lauramide DEA is used as an emulsifying agent as well as a cleansing agent. It’s found in deodorants, baby wash, food odor removal and acne treatment. It is believed to contain certain impurities which as associated with some types of cancers. It is absorbed through the skin where it creates nitrosamines which are known to be carcinogenic compounds. There is also some concern about its toxity when inhaled.
Diazolidinyl Urea is a preservative and also releases formaldehyde. It’s used in eye and contact care, lip makeup, sunscreen, douche and as a fragrance. It can contain carcinogenic impurities. Other significant health problems have been found in those who use the product.
Formaldehyde is a preservative, fungicide, germicide and disinfectant found in shaving products, shampoo, soap, nail polish and deodorants. Formaldehyde is believed to be a human carcinogen. It is banned for use by the European Union due to its properties as an irritant for asthma, the eyes and the upper respiratory trace. It may damage DNA.
Parabens are chemicals used as preservatives to prevent bacteria, yeast, and mold in products such as toothpaste, deodorants, baby lotions, nail creams and styling gels. Parabens may increase cancer risks, cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and rashes, alter hormone levels, impair fertility and change development of reproductive organs. Parabens have been found in some breast tumors.
Propylene glycol keeps products from melting or freezing and is able to enhance other compounds ability to penetrate the skin. It’s found in toothpaste, deodorants, lip products, mascara and acne treatments. Propylene glycol changes the actual structure of the skin so that chemicals can go below the skins surface and actually get into the blood stream. It’s also able to cause allergic reactions and is a skin irritant
Phthalates are chemicals used as plasticizers in cosmetics as well as industrial solvents. Phthalates are found in lotions, mousse, fragrances, and deodorant, yet they are a reproductive toxin for males and can damage the lungs, kidneys and liver.
Talc is intended to attract moisture. It’s used in soap, deodorant, powder eye shadow and blush. Talc is a proven carcinogen linked to ovarian cancer. Structurally, it is similar to asbestos and cause the same type of lung tumors.
