American medical authorities expressed strong concern as seven known cases of the flu, which has been identified as a potential source of a human flu pandemic, have been reported in the southern US.

The World Health Organisation in Geneva, which activated its global epidemic operations centre, said 57 people had died from suspected swine flu in Mexico. Mexican Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said at least 16 people had died of the swine flu in central Mexico, while officials were investigating 45 deaths and 943 possible infections. “It’s a virus which mutated from pigs and transmitted to some humans,” Dr Cordova said on television.
WHO spokesman Thomas Abraham said: “We are very, very concerned. We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human.” If an international spread was confirmed, that met the WHO’s criteria for raising the pandemic alert level, he added.
The US cases included five in California and two in Texas, in three clusters, WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said in Geneva.
Mexican authorities closed schools in the capital and the centre of the country and Mexico City launched a widespread vaccination campaign for “all people who haven’t been vaccinated” against the usual winter flu, local Health Minister Armando Ahued said.
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there was no vaccine to specifically protect humans from swine flu. The virus, H1N1, contains DNA typical to avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses, the CDC has said.
“It’s very obvious that we are very concerned. We’ve opened emergency operation centres,” CDC spokesman Dave Daigle said.
Dr Cordova urged people to avoid large crowds, shaking hands, kissing as a greeting, or using the subway.
The White House was closely following the new cases, an administration official said. A spokesman for Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection said it was closely monitoring the investigation being conducted by its US counterparts…..
